This theme features heavily in her novel, ‘The Sitar’ –in the opening line, protagonist Jaya Chakarbatti is debating between reading the Quran or The Pink Paper. We’re fighting against decades of heritage, tradition, in our own homes –but still trying to defend it all in the face of militant British liberalism. But like most Brit-Asian youth, there’s a lot more to tell. ‘I know I’m easy to box –I’m one of those suburban kids who are kicking out against their goody-two-shoes upbringing. Most of this is true, but this strange mish-mash of labels is quickly poo-pooh’d by her. Before this interview, I listened to her on the radio and imagined her to be a librarian type, a little bit nerdy, and a liberal leftie from a conservative background. Her nails are manicured and she talks with a painfully middle-class accent –evidence of her private school education, I lazily conclude. Wearing a leather jacket and with her long black bed-head hair, Rebecca is a femme, with a punk rock edge. Very horrific experience with overly aggressive bouncers.Rebecca Idris is a bit of a rebel child –I wanted to talk to her about her ebook ‘ The Sitar’, depicting her fictional ‘Lassi Lesbians’ as they live through the grim realities of being Muslim, lesbian but most tragically of all –Midlanders. If it wasn't for being turned away so many times due to such prejudice I believe my phone would not have been stolen by the scumbags clearly let into this venue. Me and my friend were two straight girls quite typically Essex (basic) looking girls as I'm sure they would have seen it and I believe this place was simply not letting us in due to this. However I would like to sum this up by saying the people that were around us quite visibly more drunk than I was were much more of the gay aesthetic. Luckily in all this hostility, the manager offered me with some support. There was a particular man that screamed in our face and the same woman that did not grant us entry in the first place joined in. The bouncers were no help and greeted us with hostility and aggression even considering my frustrating situation. I was sent into a panic, naturally I checked the place I went for food and was told there was no phone handed in there and tried to check to queue for G.A.Y. Whilst in this queue my phone was stolen. So we queued again, eager to meet out new friends. Which I can hand on my heart vouch is not true speaking a 'so called' drunk person typing this review now. We got to the front of the queue and yet again we was greeted with being told I was still too drunk. We took her advice and grabbed some food and came back. As a result the lady on the door told me I was too drunk and that I should take 25 minutes out and grab some food. in a gay bar before and we had seen how much more more drunk they was than us so we were shocked at how they got let in but not us. The people we were entering with were friends we had just met. and were turned down for me supposedly being too drunk which I can completely understand is a subjective matter but I can assure I was completely fine.
